The fire on the Fremantle Highway (2023): 5 maritime lessons

On 25 July 2023, fire broke out on the car carrier Fremantle Highway in the North Sea to the north of Ameland. There were almost 3,800 new cars on board. The crew was evacuated, one person on board lost their life and the salvage operation took more than a week. The incident showed just how complex a nautical emergency at sea is, with risks to people, shipping and the environment. Five lessons for ports and nautical services.
